As noted by DemFromCT on the front page, John McCain has once again revealed his profound ignorance of basic issues when questioned about HIV prevention and condoms.
Per the New York Times:
What followed was a long series of awkward pauses, glances up to the ceiling and the image of one of Mr. McCain’s aides, standing off to the back, urgently motioning his press secretary to come to Mr. McCain’s side.
The upshot was that Mr. McCain said he did not know this subject well, did not know his position on it, and relied on the advice of Senator Tom Coburn, a physician and Republican from Oklahoma.
McCain revealed his masterful grasp of the facts:
“The guy I really respect on this is Dr. Coburn... I’m not informed enough on it. Let me find out... I have to find out what my position was... Get me Coburn’s thing, ask Weaver to get me Coburn’s paper that he just gave me in the last couple of days. I’ve never gotten into these issues before.”
So who exactly is this Dr. Coburn?
A quick look at Wikipedia produced these gems:
In 2000, Coburn sponsored a bill to prevent the Food and Drug Administration from developing, testing or approving the abortifacient RU-486. On the issue, Coburn sparked controversy with his remark about gynecologists "I favor the death penalty for abortionists and other people who take life." Coburn also objects to legal abortion in cases of rape.
Even IN CASES OF RAPE. Every woman out there needs to read these words and consider them. Hillary voters? This is what you're willing to support?
The Senate's version of the Whistleblower Protection Act (S. 274) was approved by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs on June 13, 2007. However, it has yet to reach a vote by Senate as a hold has been placed on the bill by Senator Coburn. Coburn's hold effectively prevents passage of the bill, which has broad bipartisan support in the Senate. In fact, support for the bill may be so broad in both houses of Congress, it may be veto-proof. According to the National Whistleblower Center, Coburn's hold is an example of a right-wing Senator enacting President Bush's agenda while frustrating a majority.
A right-wing Senator enacting President Bush's agenda... just what the country needs.
Coburn has also been quoted as saying: "The gay community has infiltrated the very centers of power in every area across this country, and they wield extreme power... That agenda is the greatest threat to our freedom that we face today. Why do you think we see the rationalization for abortion and multiple sexual partners? That's a gay agenda."
There are no words. He is completely disconnected form reality. It's just scary to think he could be a trusted advisor of a potential U.S. President.
On May 23, 2007, Coburn threatened to block two bills honoring the 100th birthday of Rachel Carson. Coburn called Carson's work "junk science", proclaiming that Silent Spring, "was the catalyst in the deadly worldwide stigmatization against insecticides, especially DDT."
So he's pro-death penalty for abortion doctors and anti-RU486, pro-Bush and anti-whistleblower, pro-DDT and anti-Rachel Carson!!!!!
This is the guy that McCain "really respects" and relies on for advice?
And some Hillary supporters say they will vote for MCCAIN over Obama?
