In light of the grim revelations in the current WaPo series on Cheney - confirmation, really, of what we all suspected - now is an important moment for Democratic Presidential candidates to make a crucial statement of principle.
As the extent of Cheney's power grab and anti-democratic activities becomes more widely acknowledged - and hopefully covered by the MSM - more and more Americans will realize how bad things have become.
Our Presidential candidates have an unprecedented opportunity to claim the higher ground and demonstrate what progressives stand for.
What better chance for our candidates to dramatically illustrate what separates us from the right?
But will any of the current candidates do it?
I want to hear our candidates say:
- "My administration will uphold the Constitutional system of checks and balances, embrace oversight and obey the rule of law."
- "Democrats stand for respect of habeus corpus, the Geneva Conventions, and the right of privacy."
- "The American governement must stand for something better than torture, rendition, illegal wiretapping, and executive power grabs."
- "America's moral standing around the world has been decimated by our government's own actions. We must return to the moral values which our country once stood for."
So which candidate is going to take advantage of this opportunity?
Who wants to lead the way?
Now is the time to step forward.
